PhysioToolkit binaries for MS-Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

This directory contains packages of PhysioToolkit software that have been precompiled for MS-Windows. They should work under any recent 32-bit version of MS-Windows, including 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP, but not under MS-Windows CE or older versions (3.x or earlier).

All PhysioToolkit software is freely available in source form. You are encouraged to download the sources, compile them, study them, and modify them to suit your needs.

WFDB binaries for MS-Windows

If you have not already done so, please read about the WFDB Software Package, and read the WFDB quick start for MS-Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP.

Precompiled recent versions of the WFDB software package are among the programs available here. These versions include NETFILES support. The sources for these programs are available in the PhysioToolkit archives.

These programs were compiled under MS-Windows XP using gcc (included in Cygwin, a free Unix-like development environment for MS-Windows).

The binaries for version 10.3.0 and later versions are much smaller than earlier versions, because the applications are linked with a DLL version of the WFDB library (included) rather than the static WFDB library used in earlier versions. Although the total size is far smaller, everything that was included in the earlier versions is included in version 10.3.0 and later, as well as several new applications.

If you have already installed Cygwin (including the curl-devel package) as recommended in the WFDB quick start instructions for Windows, it will be sufficient (except for WAVE, see below) to copy the WFDB library DLL (cygwfdb-10-5.dll) and the *.exe files from wfdb/usr/bin into a directory in your PATH. The *.exe files are text-mode applications intended to be run in a Cygwin terminal emulator window (or, with some limitations, in an MS-DOS window), and the WFDB library DLL is shared by all of these applications.

To run WAVE (included in version 10.3.15 and later versions), it is also necessary to:

• install Cygwin's sunrpc and libX11-devel packages
• install XView for Windows
• start the Cygwin X server

Experimental WFDB MINGW binaries

The wfdb-MINGW binaries are an experimental set of native MS-Windows binaries, compiled using the procedure described in "Making a native Windows version of the WFDB library" in the quick start instructions. Although the WFDB Software Package has been compiled and tested extensively on many other platforms, the wfdb-MINGW binaries should be considered to be beta-quality software.

No support is available for installation or use of these binaries, although your feedback is welcome. If the wfdb-MINGW binaries don't work for you, please follow the procedure in the quick start instructions to build them from the sources.

Install Cygwin before using these binaries. Even though the wfdb-MINGW binaries themselves don't use Cygwin's POSIX emulation library (cygwin1.dll), they are text-mode applications that work much better using a standard terminal emulator and shell as provided by Cygwin than with a DOS box and command.com.

WAVE is not included in this set of binaries because it requires a POSIX environment as well as an X server. Install Cygwin/X and the standard WFDB software package (either from the sources or from the wfdb-CYGWIN binaries as described above) if you wish to use WAVE. To avoid confusion, keep the WFDB-Cygwin binaries and the WFDB-MinGW binaries in different directories (follow the layout used within the respective packages).

If there is sufficient interest, we may continue to make wfdb-MINGW binaries available for future releases of the WFDB Software Package.

plt binaries for MS-Windows

This directory also contains precompiled versions of plt for MS-Windows. In order to use these you must have installed Cygwin (see above); see the installation notes for recommendations for optional Cygwin packages and other free software that works with plt. The sources for plt are available here.
